National Pan-Hellenic Council Intake
NPHC chapters, both fraternities and sororities, recruit through a process known as intake. The intake process for every chapter is defined by its inter/national/local organization. Membership intake is a unique experience from other Greek recruitment events. Membership intake consists of you learning about the specific NPHC organization, you attending an informational meeting about the organization (e.g. informational, interest meeting, or smoker), you submitting your application directly to the organization of your interest, gaining verification of grades and other requirements, gaining approval from the organization, starting the new member education process, participating in initiation and ultimately having a new member presentation/probate where the community comes to find out who the organization's new members are. The entire new member education process is secret for most organizations so most people will not know that you are a new member until your new member presentation.
Remember, joining a fraternity or sorority is joining a brotherhood/ sisterhood. Therefore, the first tool for interested students are to build relationships with the members in the organizations. Building relationships makes it easier to inquire about the fraternity or sorority. Secondly, attend an informational and other various events held by that organization. Let members of the group know that you are interested in membership. Members are looking for prospective students that will be passionate about their fraternity/sorority, giving back to the community, and their grades.
Why join a NPHC Organization?
Joining Greek life gives you the opportunity to improve the community. Spread cultural awareness and education through various events. Create a bond like never before with a group of people that are interested in community service, leadership involvement, and pursuing higher education.
Costs to join a NPHC Organization?
Each organization has varying costs to join their organization; however, the average cost to join a NPHC Organization is $500.00-$1200.00. This covers your new member education activities and other organization specific costs.
When can I join a NPHC Organization?
You can always learn more about all 4 NPHC Organizations by visiting their inter/national/local websites, but the best way to get to know these organizations is through their current membership. It is up to you to learn about the organization that you want to join. Are you interested in an organization that does more service or is more involved in leadership position on campus? Are you interested in an organization's history over anothers? While it is up to you to decide what organization you want to join, it is important that you reach out to the specific organization and let them know you are interested! Once they know you are interested, they will invite you to events and invite you to their official informational meeting where they will go over the specific process for their organization. Do I have to be a student of color to join a NPHC Organization?
No! NPHC accept all students who are interested in promoting their principles of scholarship, service, leadership, diversity, and friendship! All students are welcome to join!
What are the requirements to join a NPHC Organization?
Each organization has their own requirements. You will need to verify the requirements with each organization. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, it will be difficult for you to get an exception.
Must be a full-time undergraduate student (enrolled in at least 12 credit hours fall/spring semesters)
Maintain at least a 2.5—2.75 GPA (though a 3.00 is recommended)
Either a 2nd Semester Freshmen or Sophomore standing (depends on fraternity/sorority)
Leadership Involvement, and community service involvement during College.
Letters of Recommendation (Including from a member of the organization)
